If ever you asked him what position he had played for the Ottawa U Gee-Gees, my father would invariably reply, with his characteristic diffidence and self-deprecating sense of humour, “What position did I play? Benchwarmer!”
Well, whatever his position, I was very pleased to come across this photo (my father fourth from the right) from The Ottawa Citizen, 7 September 1957, with my dad and his team-mates identified as “former St. Pat’s gridsters” now training for the Gee-Gees.
Newspapers are not just for obituaries. Perhaps your father or grandfather played on an athletic team? Perhaps your mother or grandmother won a prize for elocution? There’s a chance you’ll find at least a brief write-up in a local newspaper.
