Our Lady of the Visitation (OLV), South Gloucester, Carleton County, Ontario
The earliest two Confirmation lists for Our Lady of the Visitation (OLV) actually predate the establishment of the mission at South Gloucester in 1845.1 On September 27, 1843, Patrick Phelan, Coadjutor Bishop of Kingston and Titular Bishop of Carrhae, administered the sacrament of Confirmation at “the church of Glocester [Gloucester] called the church of the Visitation of the B.V. [Blessed Virgin] Mary.” And on January 10, 1844, and also at Gloucester, Bishop Patrick Phelan gave the sacrament of Confirmation to another three persons.2

This church at Glocester [Gloucester] was not the beautiful stone church that was built in the early 1850s, but was rather a rough wooden chapel built around 1830. But already the nascent parish had the name of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (now known as the parish of Our Lady of the Visitation).
In 1849, 1851, and 1853 (see below for exact dates), the sacrament of Confirmation was administered at South Gloucester by Joseph-Bruno Guigues, Bishop of Bytown.
In total, 331 parishioners were confirmed in six separate ceremonies at South Gloucester between 1843 and 1853. While most of these parishioners were youngsters between the ages of, say, 10 to 14, at least a few of the newly-confirmed were mature adults.
